چکیده
The purpose of this study is to disambiguate Japanese compound verbs (JCVs) using two methods: (1) a statistical sense discrimination method based on verbcombinatoric information, which feeds into a first-sense statistical sense disambiguation method, and (2) a manual rule-based sense disambiguation method which draws on argument structure and verb semantics. In evaluation, we found that the rulebased method outperformed the statistical method at 94.6% token-level accuracy, suggesting that fine-grained semantic analysis is an important component of JCV disambiguation. At the same time, the performance of the fully-automated statistical method was found to be surprisingly good at 82.6%, without making use of syntactic or lexical semantic knowledge.

Disambiguating Japanese compound verbs
The purpose of this study is to disambiguate Japanese compound verbs (JCV) based on two methods: (1) a statistical method which makes use of collocational or semantic information about different verb combinations, and (2) a manual rule-based method which utilises verbal and nominal semantic features. We also present a combined method where the output of the statistical method is fed into the ru...
متن کاملBaldwin, Timothy (2005) The Deep Lexical Acquisition of English Verb-particle Constructions, Computer Speech and Language, Special Issue on Multiword Expressions, Volume 19, Issue 4, pp. 398-414
This paper proposes a range of techniques for extracting English verb–particle constructions from raw text corpora, complete with valence information. We propose four basic methods, based on the output of a POS tagger, chunker, chunk grammar and dependency parser, respectively. We then present a combined classifier which we show to consolidate the strengths of the component methods.
متن کاملA Disambiguation Method For Japanese Compound Verbs
The purpose of this study is to construct a semantic analysis method for disambiguating Japanese compound verbs. Japanese speakers produce a rich variety of compound verbs, making it difficult to process them by computer. We construct a method employing 110 disambiguation rules based on the semantic features of the first verb of a compound and syntactic patterns consisting of co-occurrence betw...
متن کاملIntroduction to the special issue on multiword expressions: Having a crack at a hard nut
Multiword expressions are an integral part of language. Their heterogeneous characteristics have proved a challenge to both linguistic and computational analysis. Their importance to language technology has long been recognised. In this special issue we include ten papers which propose a variety of approaches for finding and handling these expressions, both for building general purpose lexical ...
متن کاملMultiword Expressions: Some Problems for Japanese NLP
Multiword expressions (MWEs) are notoriously difficult to handle in any language, due to syntactic and semantic idiosyncrasies. In this paper, we focus on Japanese in illustrating the types of difficulties MWEs present for NLP systems, in terms of both analysis and generation. We also outline a number of strategies which can be used to overcome such difficulties.
